Basecamp – When “Hair on Fire” Approach Isn’t Working For You.
We have all had to resort to “hair on fire” activity levels from time to time. Our world doesn’t slow down for anyone. Basecamp exists to help put that fire out and give you the tools to get organized and in control of your work, your clients and yes, your life.
The nature of today’s business is that in many cases, we are now working with people from all over the world or the neighborhood, to complete specific tasks or projects in our business like
- Outsourcers
- Freelancers
- Partners
- Employees
- Clients
We do the bulk of this work together using internet-based tools, shared documents, and workspaces using numerous logins, URL’s, and cloud storage locations. In many cases, we work with some or all of these individuals one time and then move on to different projects.
How then, can we keep all of these things organized when some of the deadlines, milestones, and contributions overlap in terms of time?
How do we share some things with some of the team and not with others while at the same time benefiting from their input on a project?
How do we involve a client in part of the discussion without involving them in all of the discussions?
That is what Basecamp is designed for. Basecamp gives us a shared workspace to create, manage and complete projects.
It has both a desktop and a mobile component. It gives individuals “need to know’ access that we as a project manager determine.
Even if we are working alone Basecamp will allow us to see our tasks and manage them based on the deadlines we have.
Because it is created with both online and offline business people in mind, it’s flexible enough to work with both short-term and long-term projects.
There is a lot of power built in to Basecamp that is helpful as long as you:
- Understand which version to use – this is important.
- Understand how to manipulate the key features of that version.
- Understand how to incorporate people on an as-needed basis.
You can get even more leverage if you know how to structure the platform.
If your workday is driven primarily by your calendar, Basecamp can make a big impact in your life.
The problem with tech – any tech – is that in order to get the most benefit from it you need to learn and understand it.
That is why I am excited to share my newest training program – Mastering Basecamp.
Mastering Basecamp provides you with 40 video tutorials that show you step-by-step how to set-up and use Basecamp in the best way for your needs. You can go through it step-by-step in order, or my favorite is to go to the specific topic that I need help with.
Getting a handle on the flow and commitments of your business is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your success. Missed deadlines and commitments can destroy your career.
